Interventional radiology as described by the Society of Interventional Radiology is a field of medicine using minimally invasive image-guided techniques to treat various medical conditions that may have required open surgery in the past. Interventional radiologists use ultrasonography, X-ray-based imaging (fluoroscopy or angiography), computerized axial tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to visualize, target and treat a wide range of medical conditions, from cardiovascular diseases to cancer. Thanks to the minimally invasive nature of interventional procedures, patients enjoy shorter hospital stays and a reduced risk of potential complications.
